AI & Control on EMO

At EMO in Hannover, it was obvious that extensive digitalization awaits the metalworking industry. When it comes to process fluids, I was glad to finally see products for controlling the fluid.

Last week (September 18-23, 2017), representatives from metalworking companies gathered in Hannover to exchange experiences – and of course show their new products – at the International EMO exhibition.

Artificial Intelligence

What really stand out from earlier EMOs was that everything is becoming more and more integrated and digitized. Industry 4.0, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoM (Internet of Machines) are imminent. Packaged in open, flexible, self-learning cloud solutions that allow anyone to use it without being in the hands of an IT giant. Companies wanting to be competitive in the future need to look at optimizing each department down to the smallest detail.

Increased control and control

What pleased me extra was that process fluid handling, which has been in the Stone Age when it comes to control systems, is getting more attention. There were several products in this field, but all of them were at a completely unrealistic price level. Prices have to go down drastically if control systems would have the chance of a big breakthrough.

What was missing?

I found it strange that no one spoke of EU chemicals legislation, which is currently affecting the entire industry and will be even more relevant during the year to come. Have they underestimated what the legislation will mean or are they intentionally ignoring what is about to come? No matter what the reason is, it is an important issue to learn more about if you do not want an unpleasant awakening.
