Circulation stops bacterial growth

Providing the machines with sufficient, well-filtered fluid is often the principal requirement when designing a new metalworking fluid system. However, for the metalworking fluid to retain good functionality it must also circulate.

Circulation is important for many reasons, but the foremost is bacteria. If the metalworking fluid is stationary it is not oxygenated. Anaerobic bacteria, which have the most effect on metalworking fluid, thrive in an oxygen-free environment.

You can avoid this with a few simple steps:

  • All machines should be provided with a constant flow (even during evenings and weekends). This can be simply achieved with a small flush flow that continuously refills the bottom tank.
  • Look for stationary volumes, for example in machines and pipes that are rarely or never used. If the machine has been at a standstill for a lengthy period it requires decontamination. Empty out all metalworking fluid so that the inferior fluid does not contaminate the rest of the system.
  • Remember that it is not always beneficial to try to recycle as much metalworking fluid as possible – it can result in a shorter service life for all of the metalworking fluid. This also applies if it concerns recycling from a chip bin for example. Ensure that there is a substantial flow, not just a few drops now and then.
