Contamination of the metalworking fluid system
Additives are always added for a reason, but they can also lead to bacterial growth. I have listed four additives that can contaminate the cutting fluid.
1. Machine lubricant
The machine lubricants used should be compatible with the metalworking fluid and the process. Hydraulic oil, gear oil, geothermal oil and grease - all have different properties and can be emulsifying or demulsifying. These properties make them either washed into the MWF or lay on the surface of it.
2. Foam suppressor
Some foam suppressors can for example act as emulsifiers and promote bacterial growth.
3. Detergents
Detergents used for machine cleaning and floor cleaning can contain both phosphates and surfactants. Phosphates are nutrients that increase the growth of bacteria. Surfaces with a high cloud point can cause foaming in the MWF.
4. Rust protection
The metalworking fluid is also influenced by the state of the details that come into the processing. The rust protection that many details are provided with can contain emulsifiers that dissolve in the cutting fluid.
